Charles Marchant Stevenson's portrait of Irving S. Shapiro takes its title "Bata Bheag" from the Gaelic for "Little Boat". The imagery evokes not only Shapiro's nautical interests, but, in a reference typical of Stevenson, comments on Shapiro's position as a rising "captain of industry". Five years after sitting for the Stevenson portrait, Shapiro became chairman and chief executive officer of Dupont (E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company), the first person outside the Dupont family to hold the top position, serving from 1973 until his retirement in 1981.
